Description: The influence of the Second Viennese School, especially Webern, is evident in these ensemble works for between 4 and 16 performers. Both the brevity of the works and their strict and highly concentrated formal organisation suggest Webern. Gombau's versatility as a composer is evident in the ingenious Paráfrasis, an occasional piece in which he deliberately avoided any suggestion of avant-gardism to avoid upsetting the audience, while cheekily retaining a modern idiom in a very skewed sense of tonality (and all in a five-minute piece of the character of a fanfare). In later years he also experimented with electro-acoustic music, transforming instrumental sounds to create his own tape parts (his original tapes are used in the recording of Los Invisibles). Six short pieces written for the accompaniment of cinema bulletins (like Spanish-inflected regime-friendly Shostakovich miniatures, with hints of Webern again), conducted by the composer, and his only essay in pure electronic music - mostly a compendium of effects obtainable with the limited resources available to him at the time (1968) are also included. Taller de Música Contemporánea de Salamanca; José Luis Temes.
