JOSEPH-GUY ROPARTZ (1864-1955): Piano Trio (Alexis Galperine [violin], Cécilia Tsan [cello], Jean-Louis Haguenauer [piano]), String Trio, Prélude, marine et chansons.
Catalogue Number: 06I078
Description: Dating from 1918, the piano trio is a big, cyclic work in Franckian style of 38 minutes which also seems to exude the air of the Brittany coast and to pulse with the ebb and flow of the sea, especially in its first movement. Although not a "war composition" in strict terms, its progress is from darkness to light (although that, in itself, is also Franckian). The triptych of 1928 also owes its deeply poetic nature to Brittany, more obviously evident in its modal themes while the string trio (1934) is from Ropartz' late style - austere, refined and elegant, with not a note wasted, though still containing all aspects of emotion from joyousness to painful nostalgia.
