GIOACCHINO ROSSINI (1792-1868): La donna del lago.
Catalogue Number: 06I058
Label: Opera Rara
Reference: ORC 34
Description: In this setting of Scott's "The Lady of the Lake" (1819), Rossini made telling use of the large and virtuosic chorus and orchestra at the San Carlo theatre in Naples, using up to six horns on and off stage and a myriad of other instrumental effects. Richer melodically, vocally, harmonically and contrapuntally than anything he'd done before, La donna is, through the potent atmosphere Rossini creates (even though no Scottish tunes are used or imitated) a landmark in Italian Romantic opera. 3 CDs. Italian-English libretto. Carmen Giannattasio (soprano), Kenneth Tarver, Gregory Kunde (tenors), Patricia Bardon (mezzo), Edinburgh Festival Chorus, Scottish Chamber Orchestra; Maurizio Benini.
