Description: From 1937, the big 44-minute Second is distinguished not only by great vitality but also by a vital musical imagination. There are three themes (instead of two, as in the tradition of the Viennese classical composers), and their derivation and further elaboration no longer occur dialectically but purely contrapuntally, that is, linearly, on the basis of mutual links (sometimes between all three themes at high points), derivations, and combinations. The Fourth was rewritten twice (the first version having been destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943) is more concise - more than a third shorter, and is more cloudy and reserved in emotion. The ghostly figure of Bruckner drifts through both works, transformed rather than emulated as in Gerhard Frommel’s first symphony, also of 1938 (05T010 below).
