Description: There’s another reason we’re offering these newly reissued discs beyond “maybe you didn’t get them the first time way back when”: maybe you did get them and the CDs became bronzed (two of these three did in my case) and you were unable to replace them. Anyway, here are Wesley’s Classical symphonies, the first three from the 1780s and in the mold of Abel and J.C. Bach and the fourth from 1802 and including the recognition of Haydn; Crotch in 1805, 1814 and 1817 stuck to the same inspiration as he believed Haydn “the greatest of all instrumental composers”; Potter’s pair from 1828 and 1832 are in an early Romantic style and, though Schubert, Beethoven and Haydn may peek out here and there, the Tenth especially shows some personal touches of real individuality. Milton Keynes Chamber Orchestra; Hilary Dawan Wetton. Original 1989 release.
