Description: Inspired by Brahms’ late clarinet sonatas, Reger composed his two Op. 49 works in 1900, following the Brahmsian model closely but also highly distinctive in their pervasive handling of melody and the breadth of their phrasing. The third sonata is from 1908-09 in a more formally complex but melodically accessible style, with a cyclical theme that is transformed throughout the four movements before gently dissolving to leave the Ländler-like finale in a Brahmsian mist. Claudio Conti (clarinet), Roberta Bambace (piano).
