Description: Two works separated by 35 years, the 1973-74 Magnificat a big (45-minute) commission for the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Salzburg Cathedral which stands as a major turning point in Penderecki's move away from the avant-garde towards his later neo-romantic style and the 2009 Kadisz, commissioned to mark the 65th anniversary of the liquidation of the Jewish ghetto in Lodz. This 20-minute piece uses both raw and dissonant expressionism in its setting of poetry by a teenage ghetto inhabitant and in a setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah and changes 180 degrees to a somber, supplicatory choral movement and finishes with a cantor-tenor singing the "Orphan's Kaddish", mellifluously but increasingly fervent. Polish-English texts. Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra; Antoni Wit.
