Description: Two of these three works made up a Marco Polo release way back in 1988 and I listened to that before hearing the new one. Such is the quality of the new recording, its dynamic range, its "wide-screen" spread of sound, its capture of the orchestral color in the scores, that the Marco Polo sounds like a two-dimensional run-through even though it is played by a Slovak orchestra. Here, the explosive qualities of the 1935 Balladic Suite are like the symphonic Vaughan Williams and the quiet, meditative sections have an impressionistic transparency and delicacy. Slovak folk music comes to the fore in the Symfonietta, a 1955-56 adaptation of an earlier piano sonata while the longest work here, the 27-minute Metamorphoses (1953), five variations on original themes but really more like an orchestral suite, gain similar benefit from the fabulous recording. You've never heard Suchon sound like this! Estonian National Symphony Orchestra; Neeme J√§rvi
