ITTAI SHAPIRA (b.circa1980?): The Old Man and the Sea for Violin and Orchestra, Concierto Latino for Violin and Orchestra, Caprice Habañera for Solo Violin.
Catalogue Number: 05N088
Label: Champs Hill
Description: The Concierto Latino appears to date from 2005 since a mugging in New York City led to various interesting circumstances involving the actual composition helping Shapira remember the sequence of the assault and to psychologically come to terms with it. You need not know that, though, to appreciate a generally joyous work in which the Latin influences run from Colombian pop singer Shakira, Ladino and Iberian idioms, South American and Mexican classical idioms and the Cuban group Buena Vista Social Club. Even more recent is the Old Man, obviously suggested by the Hemingway book, its three movements “The Fisherman”, “At Sea” and “The Hero” directly following three scenes in the novel and with Cuban music the dominant influence here as well. Ittai Shapira (violin), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; Neil Thomson, London Serenata; Krzysztof Chorzelski.
