Description: Fibich’s shortish (17 min.) sonata of 1886, dedicated to Dvorák, is oddly not available otherwise on CD. Czech folk music is most apparent in its first movement; a theme-and-variations slow movement and a slightly less folksy rondo finale follow. Schulhoff’s six-movement suite full of acerbic wit, sarcasm and parodies of popular musical styles is followed by the 1985 Pergolesi Variations (First Recording) in which Hurník explores a dizzying variety of styles and emotions in what is probably the most striking work on this disc (other than the incomparable Dvorák, of course). Piano Duo Danhel-Kolb.
