Description: Frommel, like many others, was a composer the Nazis didn’t like because of his rejection of tradition and attraction to the style of Stravinsky and Hindemith which is evident in his second sonata (1935). But Frommel was also a dispatch carrier for the Wehrmacht in France at the time he wrote his Third (1940/41), whose unreal, expressionist elements suggest the fin de siècle more than wartime France. No. 1 (1931) is a sonorous piece of late Romanticism tinged with more of the latter but with the Stravinsky of Petrushka or Le sacre in its finale. One of Frommel’s symphonies was premiered by Furtwängler in 1942. Too much to hope for... Tatiana Blome (piano).
