RUUD LANGGAARD (1893-1952): String Quartets, Vol. 1 - No. 2, BVN 145, No. 3, BVN 183, No. 6, BVN 160, Variations on “O Sacred Head! Now Wounded”.
Catalogue Number: 05N012
Description: Eight of Langgaard’s ten quartets date from 1914-1925 and four of them share material inspired by a personal romantic encounter in 1913. No. 3 (1924), the only one to be published (in 1931), is the most modern and striking, a collision between tradition and the avant-garde which is likely the most experimental Danish music before Nielsen’s Symphony No. 6 as aggressive dissonance, treated with a trademark ironic humor, gives way ultimately to a Danish hymn-tune. No. 2 (1918) contains a scherzo (“Train Passing By”) written five years before Honegger’s Pacific 231 and its other three movements - “Storm Clouds Receeding”, “Landscape in Twilight” and “The Walk” - suggest the romanticism of his earliest symphonies while No. 6 (1918-19) is a one-movement programmatic work associated with that 1913 encounter mentioned above. Nightingale String Quartet. SACD hybrid.
