Description: We've had both his symphonies on Sterling and his piano concerto on Hyperion; now we have a selection of this Norwegian composer's solo piano music. Immediately appealing, with easy charm, they also indulge in stormy virtuosity (especially the Variations and the Morceaux) but, except for the pieces on Norwegian folksongs (Alnæs was commissioned by the publisher Wilhelm Hansen after Grieg's Melodies of Norway proved such a big seller to provide more), his style is German late-Romantic with the late (1921) Morceaux shoeing a more pronounced and refined use of tone color and almost none of the dense chords and octave-doublings of his earlier pieces; this latter might be attributed to his encounters with Debussy's piano music although there is nothing at all Impressionistic about the Morceaux themselves. Erling R. Eriksen (piano).
