Description: This 1830 romantic opera, to a libretto based on Washington Irving's "The Student of Salamanca", was Spohr's next-to-last stage work and attracted conductor Fröhlich by its similarities to Wagner's later Tristan und Isolde in its second act which leads one on to further discoveries about Spohr's importance in establishing the genre of Romanticism in music and the extent of his influence on later composers. Needless to say, this belongs in the collections of all lovers of German Romantic opera and joins Jessonda, Faust and Zemire und Azor to make four Spohr operas now available on disc. 3 CDs.
