Description: This 'sacred oratorio' sets sundry biblical texts to illustrate the story of Jesus, with emphasis on the mystery of divine incarnation. Structurally the work departs little from the tradition, with solo recitatives presenting the texts which are then commented on and elaborated by the choir. Much of the music is frankly tonal, with a liturgical, ritual feel emphasized by extended soaring melodies suggesting chant. Dramatic color is added to the narrative through instrumental solos and especially the percussion; gongs and bells enhance the sense of a ritual occasion. Each section is based around a Biblical account, and these are varied in character and musical texture within a relatively conservative idiom featuring the choir and string orchestra; the recitatives adopt a more modern (though never remotely avant-garde) approach in the dialogue between the solo voices, cello and clarinet, with percussion coloration and dramatic special effects. A substantial and powerful work, both musically and philosophically convincing. 2 CDs. German texts. Geraldine Zeller (soprano), Anne Bierwirth (alto), Manuel König (tenor), Harvestehuder Chamber Choir, Ensemble Resonanz; Claus Bantzer.
