Description: Kats-Chernin's brand of quirky romantic minimalism enters very Nymanesque territory in Village Idiot, an immensely appealing, energetically propulsive piece (with an affecting, unexpectedly tender central episode) inspired by the chaotic, obsessive, sometimes profound utterances of schizophrenics, among whom one of the composer's sons is numbered. Woolf's piece is a tribute to his home city of Detroit, with its sometimes troubled history and unique culture. An electronic part compiled out of tiny distorted samples of Motown songs acts as a backdrop for a melodic, rather nostalgic, tonal piano quintet with some minimalistic and popular-sounding elements. Luna's Graffiti consists of 11 short movements paying tribute to different composers, both classical (in its broadest sense) and jazz. Jazz-inspired throughout, it has a free-jazz improvisatory feel, lively and unpredictable. Present Music; Kevin Stalheim.
