Description: Two substantial violin concerti, and a concertante movement also of significant scale and ambition. The concerti - subtited Music for Violin and Orchestra Nos. 2 and 4 - are both in Rihm's personal reimagined late-romanticism style, in which familiar gestures hover, tantalisingly, just out of reach; we know the idiom and what it strives (successfully) to express, but simultaneously we find that the music is entirely novel. "Time Chant" (1991-92) begins and ends ethereally, emerging into and departing from consciousness almost imperceptibly. The violin's sustained soliloquy is present throughout, first meditatively, later as a sombre threnody, with a more agitated dialogue with denser orchestral textures in the central part. A feature of this work, and of Rihm's large-scale orchestral works in general, is the way in which tense, discursive modern thickets of complexity suddenly open out into vistas of late-romantic soundscapes, to stunning effect. COLL'ARCO (2008) sounds even more like a modern vision of a Romantic concerto, with feats of formidable virtuosity required of the soloist, and a sense of dramatic confrontation underlying the main argument of the work. "Light Play (A Summer Piece)" is "a transparent orchestral movement ... something light, but not lightweight", and it alludes to its Romantic forebears even more explicitly, here unambiguously, and delightfully, almost quoting from musical nature-scapes of the 19th century in its beguiling and sensuous warmth.
