Description: The Winter Poems, dating from 1948, are atmospheric works evoking the mood of that season while the quartet (1984) juxtaposes a strikingly lively and animated first movement with an elegiac and quietly resigned second movement. Mrs. Alwyn’s first quartet, a student work of 1945 is a piece of striking contrasts, the restless key signatures, variegated rhythms and stretched dynamics of the first movement complemented by its chiaroscuro-like companion conveying, by turns, moods of gentle tranquillity, passion and austerity. From 1950, the Second is also an exercise in contrasts, although more vividly realised and acutely articulated. Tippett Quartet.
