The Romantic Piano Concerto - 74WILLIAM STERNDALE BENNETT (1816-1875): Piano Concertos No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 1, No. 2 in E Flat, Op. 4 and No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 9.
Catalogue Number: 04T007
Description: All but the fifth concerto have now appeared in this series (all but the fourth appeared on Lyrita too while No. 4 was recorded back in the 80s by Unicorn-Kanchana) so collectors can anticipate a third Bennett volume from Hyperion which will need a tasty coupling (and who knows what that could be?). These three concertos date from Bennett’s 16th through 18th years of age and are rooted stylistically in the London Piano School (J.B. Cramer, Moscheles and Cipriani Potter) with John Fields’ Nocturne behind the lovely slow movement in No. 1. Up next for The Romantic Piano Concerto: Ferdinand Ries’ Nos. 8 & 9. BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; Howard Shelley (piano).
