HANS WERNER HENZE (1926-2012): Symphony No. 2, Symphony No. 10.
Catalogue Number: 04P011

Description: Apparently this is only the second recording of the Second, a shortish (18 min. here) work of 1949 which Henze intended to be the calling card which announced his presence on the new music scene. It uses tone rows for each of its three movements but tonal, and even melodic, elements are not avoided and the contrapuntal third movement climaxes with a quotation of the chorale Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern. This is definitely only the second recording of the Tenth (we offered the first nine years ago on the French Accord label), written between 1997 and 2000. In four movements which conform to the familiar symphonic form but also bear evocative titles ("Storm", "Hymn", "Dance", "Dream"), it has no explicit program, but Henze's long-standing tradition of incorporating extra-musical and frankly political elements in his music suggests that there probably is some autobiographical content in this intensely emotional score.
