Description: This large-scale oratorio is an impassioned plea for peace, written ten years after the 9/11 attacks. Specifically, it deals with the question of allegedly divinely sanctioned warfare and violence, from the original Crusades to 9/11 itself. The texts range from 12th century to 20th century political statements and poetry. The music is bold and dramatic, and well suited to its purpose; tonal, and drawing on romantic and post-romantic sources from Liszt and Bruckner to Rachmaninov, Shostakovich and Britten, some of which influences may be a little too explicitly recognisable for some tastes. But the piece is undeniably effective and moves along at an invigorating pace, balanced by some passages of eloquent pathos, and forms a very approachable vehicle for its balance and well considered message. Texts included. Paul Nilon (tenor), Stephen Gadd (baritone), Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and Youth Chorus, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; Gavin Carr.
