Description: Jones' music is thoroughly tonal and approachable, resembling early 20th-century British romantic composers who wanted nothing to do with newfangled continental trends. The suite from his ballet music inspired by Dylan Thomas' radio play portraying the small daily doings and inner lives of the inhabitants of an imaginary Welsh village is beautifully wistful, nostalgic and full of evocative atmosphere, expressed in gestures of real sentiment, stopping short of sentimentality but with real depth of emotional feeling. The Piano Miniatures are nostalgic album-leaves, somewhere between impressionism and the Romantic Idylls of MacDowell, while the four movements of String Music exude a gentle melancholy that recalls Rachmaninov in somber, meditative mood (the Vocalise seems to hover in the background of several phrases throughout). The Fantasy for strings is the most dramatic work, with hints of Shostakovichian tension in its agitated central section, surrounded by episodes of pastoral melody, tinged with unease.
