STEPHEN PAULUS (b.1949): To Be Certain of the Dawn.
Catalogue Number: 04K104
Description: Paulus' readily accessible, tonal style enhances the emotionally compelling, direct story-telling aspect of this Holocaust memorial oratorio, commissioned by the Basilica of St Mary in Minneapolis as a gift to the Temple Israel synagogue. The piece's multiple layers of performance groups will recall the War Requiem; here, soloists narrate glimpses of Jewish life from the 1930s, based on photographs from the time, while the main chorus takes on the role of a more global narrator (with some fine and appropriately apocalyptic dramatic interludes), and the children's chorus provides prayers of hope. I n the work's final section, after a hauntingly beautiful orchestral interlude, the soloists become the voices of Holocaust survivors, and the work ends prayerfully, with cantor and choirs combining in expressing hope for the future. Texts included. Barry Abelson (cantor), Elizabeth Futral (soprano), Christina Baldwin (mezzo), John Tessier (tenor), Philip Cokorinos (bass-baritone), Minnesota Chorale, Minnesota Boychoir, The Basilica Cathedral Choir, The Cathedral Choristers, Minnesota Orchestra; Osmo Vänskä.
