Description: These warmly Romantic and evocative tonal works make a well integrated and attractive program. Mathias' trio consists of three character pieces associated with three signs of the Zodiac, harmonically rich, two movements with a somewhat agitated quality framing a calm andante. Jan Bach's piece is a set of variations on a Welsh harp tune, highlighting each solo instrument in turn. The title refers to the traditional Welsh contest of musical and sporting skills; the music accordingly provides ample opportunity for virtuosic display of an appealingly lighthearted kind. Bennett's work is an ample expansion of Debussy's Syrinx, true to the nature of the original but refracting it through Bennett's own wide-ranging musical sensibilities. Aureole Trio.
