Description: Written in 1995 and withheld for ten years, the Third is huge for a string quartet - 57 minutes in this recording - and represents the end result of Górecki's compositional process. As Ivan Moody put it in his Gramophone review, "If one leaves the semiotics behind, one is able to make the possibly shocking discovery that one is listening to a work of transcendent, soul-searing beauty, in a fully romantic, not consciously postmodern, sense.” The 1957 sonata, one of Górecki’s earliest acknowledged works, looks back at Bartók and Prokofiev for its confrontation between the lyrical and the grotesque.
