Description: Two Belgians who were founders of their new country’s national musical consciousness, the former as a pianist and teacher as well as composer while Benoit, a bit better-known, turned his attention to the Flemish part of the country’s music. Dupont’s concerto, from 1857, has a dark, dramatic first movement, a lyrical nocturne for a slow movement and a lively dance movement finale. Benoit gives us Lisztian form with movements entitled Ballade, Bardic Song and a demonic Fantastical Hunt. Inspired by Flemish legends and folk tales, the work dates from 1865. St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra; Howard Shelley (piano).
