EDWARD ELGAR (1857-1934): The Spirit of England, Op. 80 (Rachel Nicholls [soprano], Hallé Choir), Une Voix dans le Désert, Op. 77 (Joshua Ellicott [narrator], Jennifer France [soprano]), Grania and Diarmid, Op. 42 (Madeleine Shaw [mezzo]), ARNOLD BAX (1883-1953): In Memoriam.

Description: Two of Elgar’s least-recorded works deal with the losses of the First World War (Grania and Diarmid is better known and earlier) and are coupled here with a similarly little-known Bax piece, also elegiac in nature but its object was an Irishman killed by Brits rather than Brits killed by Germans. Don’t confuse this 16-minute In Memoriam for full orchestra with the chamber work of the same title (and the same year - 1916) for cor anglais, harp and string quartet - there’s only one other recording of either of them. Live recordings except for Grania. English and French-English texts. Hallé Orchestra; Mark Elder.
