Description: Hyperion celebrates International Women’s Day (March 8) with this release. Oddly for this series, nothing is a premiere recording - we even had the 1923 Howell concerto five years ago from Cameo Classics, but it’s good to have major artists giving this 19-minute, single-movement piece the “first team” treatment. It’s mainly a lyrical piece with the piano often “inside” the orchestra, late 19th century German and Russian Romantic (a few seconds of Richard Strauss and a couple of Rachmaninov). Chaminade’s 1888 Concertstück is much more a showpiece with Lisztian piano flourishes and Wagner in the background of a style mainly influenced by Saint-Saëns and Bizet. Danny Driver (piano), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; Rebecca Miller.
