Description: The final batch of Frommel’s seven sonatas continue in his fundamentally Romantic approach melded with a Stravinskian vitality and characterized by the presence of sensuous melodic lines and dance-like rhythms. No. 4 (1943) seems to be a determined attempt to create beauty in the midst of war, Frommel’s war service in France allowing him to become captivated by the subtleties of Fauré’s piano music. There’s a quality of heroic struggle (against post-war atonality?) in the 1951 Fifth, a poised profundity in the Sixth (1956) and an abstract crystalline, timeless quality in what Frommel knew would be his last sonata (1966). Tatiana Blome (piano).
