Description: As in many of Soler's works, an atmosphere of profound melancholy pervades many of the pieces on this disc. The early, dodecaphonic Polifonías clearly show the influence of Schoenberg, but the shade of Scriabin is also evident, and the latter is confirmed in the very Scriabinesque sonata and Estudios-poemas, which push Scriabin's late chromatic language a few steps further toward atonality. The Rilke lieder have a very late Romantic feel; despite serial elements to the compositional technique, the most apparent Second-Viennese trait is the approach to the voice. Here as elsewhere, Wagner's harmonic thinking is clearly an important background influence. The substantial Quartet makes explicit reference to both Berg's and Schoenberg's (later) quartet writing, and would make a worthy companion piece to these more established works.
