CÉSAR FRANCK (1822-1890): Stradella (orch. Luc van Hove [b.1957]).
Catalogue Number: 03P058
Description: Franck's first stage work was written in 1841 or 1842 and left unorchestrated at a time when a concert tour, followed by a long illness and the need to get away from his domineering father who forced him to write the Biblical oratorio Ruth probably led to its being buried in the composer's desk. There are indications of orchestration and the Belgian composer van Hove has provided a score which seems to indicate that Franck followed the Gounod-Massenet stylistic path. The opera is set during Venetian Carnival which led to the stage set designer to provide a very wet stage in this live performance from L'Opéra de Liège in September of 2012 - much water and rain!
