CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL BACH (1714-1788): St. Matthew Passion (1781).
Catalogue Number: 03P040
Label: Rondeau Production
Description: As we know from previous C.P.E. passion recordings, his 21 settings often were pastiches or only the arias and choruses were newly composed since these were one-off performances in church (which also meant that they had to be kept to around only one hour in length). This one, another refugee from the Soviet-plundered Berlin Singakademie archive, stands out for being almost entirely original. Excellent notes on the genre and the ways Bach adapted to it once he arrived in Hamburg and realized that he had to provide one of these every year. German texts. Doerthe Maria Sandmann (soprano), Elisabeth von Magnus (alto), Marcus Ullmann (tenor), Sebastian Bluth, Tobias Scharfenberger (basses), Windsbach Boys Choir, Deutsche Kammer-Virtuosen Berlin; Karl-Friedrich Beringer.
