Description: Yamada made a point in the 1930s of rejecting the "facile nationalism" of many Japanese composers yet his op. 12 of 1939 is a paraphrase of two Japanese folk songs. Perhaps the ballet music of 1940, Spellbinding, set in India, contains elements of Indian music (the notes are silent on the matter) but the "oriental exoticism" is apparent here too. The Song of Young People though, from 1937, sounds more Russian than anything else and the fact that Yamada was a student of Mahler's student Klaus Pringsheim is evident everywhere in the quite Mahlerian Grand Treasure (1944). Russian Philharmonic Orchestra; Dmitry Yablonsky.
