Description: Here is an almost completely forgotten coeval of Shostakovich who followed a much different path than the latter, than Prokofiev or Stravinsky. There is nothing neo-classically prickly or tonally spiky about any of the music on this disc (all listed as world premiere recordings) which dates from as early as 1943 (3 Pieces) and as late as 1974 (Sonata No. 2). Rakov studied with Gliere and he followed the Russian Late Romantic path of his teacher, Myaskovsky and Rachmaninov. Melody, harmonic color and, sometimes, a subtle humor make these pieces a must-have for collectors of conservative 20th century Russian music. David Fr├╝hwirth (violin), Milana Chernyavska (piano).
