PETER HEISE (1830-1879): Cello Sonata in A Minor, NIELS W. GADE (1817-1890): Piano Trio in F, Op. 42, Novellette, Op. 29.
Catalogue Number: 03N048
Description: Although Heise is best known as a song composer, he left more than a handful of chamber works (not that you'd know it from the CD catalogues), of which this 1867 sonata is a welcome return to CD (once available on the hard-to-get, no-U.S. distribution Kontrapunkt label). Not surprisingly for a song specialist, he ignores sonata form and goes for melodic transformation and freedom of expression which fits perfectly with his ability to create lovely lyrical ideas seemingly at will. The more "academic" but hardly less appealingly melodic Gade pieces were offered last March on MD&G but that is still the only other recording of them currently available. Christoph Koncz (violin), Jörgen Fog (cello), Yoko Fog-Urata (piano).
