Description: Volume 1 presents chronologically Maderna's first essays in orchestral forms, between the late 1940s and mid 1950s. The very first, Composizione n.1, is already a most impressive, quasi-symphonic confrontation of tradition, rigorously constructed to begin as a late-romantic sounding cort├Ęge which slowly disintegrates as the work progresses. About a year later, the next work presents at the outset a radiant melody which leads to an experimental, increasingly dissonant yet always lyrically based treatment of form, incorporating diverse styles, textures and idioms. Studi sets passages of Kafka in a dramatic scena which echoes the hallucinatory unreality of Kafka's original. The relatively brief Improvvisazioni seem like experiments in incorporating existing dance rhythms (no. 1) and expressive directions (no .2) into a contemporary orchestral context, subtly and economically exploring (in an idiom that owes much to tradition, and remains accessible throughout) the expressive possibilities of the medium. No texts. Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra; Arturo Tamayo. SACD hybrid.
