PAUL HINDEMITH (1895-1963): Das Marienleben, Op. 27.
Catalogue Number: 03K064
Reference: DACOCD 670
Description: Originally composed in 1923, Hindemith extensively revised this 71-minute setting of Rilke poems on the Virgin Mary's life in 1948 when he was now part of the tradition which he had so consciously and intentionally opposed during his "bad-boy" period of the teens and early 20s. The work now stands as his acknowledgement of and his participation in the German lied tradition, for all that it may still strike conservative listeners as spiky and often dissonant. German-English texts. Elisabeth Meyer-Topsøe (soprano), Per Salo (piano).
