Description: This hour-long work in three parts with further subdivisions is an important early example of Rihm's ability to create music which seems simultaneously precisely controlled and spontaneous to the point of randomness. The construction of quasi-orchestral textures with just three stringed instruments is also a striking feature of the piece. Some of the time the music is fragmentary, its gestures (sometimes recognisable as derived from late Beethoven quartets) apparently unconnected; at others, a remarkable unity is achieved and a sense of inexorable, even headlong inevitability of narrative progression. For music that is fundamentally as functionally atonal as this (noise effects and extreme extended techniques are almost entirely excluded however), this absolute sense of direction is a remarkable paradox, and a potent suggestion of Rihm's originality and the breadth of his totally original vision.
