Description: Volume 8 of Audiomax’s series of Dutch cello sonatas brings us three works all of which, oddly enough, date from 1882. Hutschenruyter is the more reserved of the two composers and his sonata has an Adagio first movement which was shocking enough to deprive him of a composition prize which he could have won if he had been willing to change its name from “Sonata” to “3 Fantasy Pieces”. Witte’s sonata has youthful Romantic passion in quantity but all three works derive from the Mendelssohn-Schumann axis of style. Doris Hochscheid (cello), Frans van Ruth (piano).
