KARL WEIGL (1881-1949): Violin Sonata No. 2 in G, 2 Stücke for Violin and Piano (First Recordings), Piano Trio in D Minor, 2 Stücke for Cello and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 02U007
Description: The notes have a felicitous way of describing Weigl’s music: “quintessential Viennese fin de siècle”and “like Mahler without the neuroses, or a bit like Franz Schmidt in its nobility”. His violin sonata comes from 1937 and it’s a bit lighter than Hans Gál’s 1933 sonata (05L084) and is not dissimilar to the fine piano trio of the following year which was recently recorded by Challenge Classics (02P068). The short accompanying pieces are definitely for the concert stage, not the salon. David Frühwirth (violin), Benedict Kloeckner (cello), Florian Krumpöck (piano).
