EDWARD ELGAR (1857-1934): The Apostles, Op. 49.
Catalogue Number: 02O048
Reference: CD HLD 7534
Description: One of the relatively neglected Elgar oratorios, The Apostles comes after The Dream of Gerontius and not long before In the South and the symphonies, so the use of a large orchestra, extended percussion section and organ, and the complex system of leitmotifs for the characters make for an absorbing (if rarely edge-of-seat exciting) experience. Recorded live on May 5, 2012 an in rehearsals for that performance. For minute-counters, Elder knocks eight of them off the 1973 EMI Boult recording. 2 CDs. Texts included. Rebecca Evans (soprano), Alice Coote (mezzo), Paul Groves (tenor), Jacques Imbrailo, David Kempster (baritones), Brindley Sherratt (bass), Chorus of Apostles from Royal Northern College of Music and University of Manchester, Hallé Choir, Hallé Youth Choir, Hallé Orchestra; Mark Elder.
