Description: This disc of irresistibly lively and appealing works by the distinguished Pittsburgh composer, represents the most 'crossover' aspect of her output, which frequently features cross-cultural influences. In the first and third pieces of Other Sun, the composer gives free rein to her minimalist tendencies, which have been a propulsive element in her works of all types for many years, while the second has something of the nature of a popular song. The three main works feature an electronically enhanced Baroque flute, which engages in lively dialogue with similarly processed cello in Traverso Mistico, again consisting of lively outer movements with a minimalist pulse and more than a suggestion of rock 'n roll energy, with a contrasting slow central ballad. The warmly exotic percussion work (there's a synthesizer in there too) Island Echoes has something of the gamelan about it, something of Caribbean drumming, and the mysterious sounds of the tropical night. The exhilarating Night Train has all the requisite elements to become wildly popular; frankly melodic and tonal, again a perfect combination of a little bit minimalist, a little bit rock 'n roll. Stephen Schulz (flute), Brandon Schantz, Brandon Kelly, Zachary Larimer, Andrew Wright (percussion), Cello Fury, Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble.
