Description: Unless you're listening to his Romanian Rhapsodies, it's hard to tell a symphony or chamber work by Enescu. The influences of Schumann, Wagner and Dukas (along with Bach and Beethoven, of course) only suggest how he synthesized the German and French traditions in a way unique to himself. So, you could call his big, 36-minute first piano quartet from 1910 "late Romantic", but you'll need to read the full page of notes on its stylistic qualities to understand why it's so different from its discmate of over 30 years later, subtle, intricate, almost enigmatic. Dedicated to Fauré, it contains long stretches of tranquil, intimate music, as intimate as some of the outsized heroic gestures in the First are rousing and extrovert. Tammuz Piano Quartet.
