Description: Beeson was reportedly pleased with Nicolas Slonimsky's description of his style as "marked by enlightened utilitatianism". What that means is that Beeson adjusted his musical style and content (especially in his operas) to the characters and period represented in the libretto. Thus, for The Sweet Bye and Bye, he used evangelical hymns and flapper dances; for this 1975 work, whose main female character is an operatic soprano, unwitting object of a romantic wager between the two main male characters, performing La Traviata. So Beeson alludes throughout this romantic comedy to middle-period Verdi. This recording was made by the opera company which premiered the work. 2 CDs. Libretto included. Carol Wilcox (soprano), Robert Owen Jones (tenor), Ronald Highley (baritone), Members of the Kansas City Philharmonic; Russell Patterson. Original 1976 RCA LP release.
