Description: Lazarof's music is notable for its finely-etched, hard-edged clarity and heightened emotional expressiveness, while avoiding self-conscious modernism, and this is true of these chamber works. The trio is grounded in tonality, with a well-defined structure, beginning with an improvisatory first movement and a tightly argued second, giving way to a lyrical and rhapsodic finale. The solo and duo violin pieces are virtuosic, very Bart√≥kian; the √Čtudes in particular brief but thorny little dialogues, expressive and technically challenging. Tempi concertati consists of five movements; three rhapsodic studies in contrasting mood entitled Invenzione I and II and Fantasia, separated by two lyrical movements with a strong feeling of pre-atonal Schoenberg, the first interrupted by an agitated interlude. Christiane Edinger (violin), Adrien Iliescu (second violin), Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt (cello), Klaus Hellwig (piano).
