FRANZ XAVER SCHNYDER VON WARTENSEE (1786-1868): Symphony No. 3 in B Flat "Military", Overture in C Minor.
Catalogue Number: 02J005
Description: The symphony dates from 1848, the year of revolutionary turmoil throughout Europe although Switzerland had its battle between liberals and reactionaries the year before (the liberals won), and Schnyder's 43-minute symphony's origin was in this struggle. Although it would be hard to recognize anything "military" in it beyond the use of Turkish-style percussion in the outer movements and a march and trio in the middle of the slow movement. Otherwise, we have an attractive early Romantic work with echoes of Beethoven in its portentous first movement slow introduction. The notes point out many original formal and structural items which make Schnyder's symphony unique for its period but which will pass the non-musical listener up entirely. The 1818 overture is in the finest Romantic minor key style and makes one wonder what the first two symphonies are like. Württemberg Philharmonie Reutlingen; Christopher Fifield.
