Description: The Croatian composer’s third cpo release brings us three works from later in his career than before. The 1961 song cycle sets texts, mostly written in the 1930s by Kurt Barthel, an East German poet who spent the Second World War in an English internment camp. Loudly or quietly anti-war, with a couple that bristle with acidic wit, they receive settings of a neo-expressionist and neo-romantic kind with the prosody of the poetry the main focus. From 1962, the harpsichord concerto is as neo-baroque as you might expect but also uses a Croatian folk song in its slow movement as, indeed, does the 1977 piccolo concerto which conveys an idyllic, Arcadian scene bathed in sunlight, the piccolo standing in for birdsong and shepherds’ pipes. German-English texts. Michael Martin Kofler (piccolo), Jörg Halubek (harpsichord), Miljenko Turk (baritone), Southwest German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim; Timo Handschuh.
