Description: The young composer's first full-scale orchestral work, this 45-minute mass was the final exam for the Doctor of Music degree at Cambridge, submitted in 1899. Omitting the Kyrie, Gloria and Agnus Dei in keeping with the practice of concert-hall works on liturgical themes, it has the expected influences of Brahams and Dvorak as well as more than a little of the contrapuntal skill which would have Vaughan Williams five years later writing the "Fugue" article for The Grove Dictionary. Also unusual is the 11-minute Offertory - a purely orchestral movement as demanded by the University's guidelines for doctoral composition submissions. Olivia Robinson (soprano), Rebecca Lodge (contralto), Christopher Bowen (tenor), Edward Price (baritone), The Bach Choir, Martin Ennis (organ), New Queen's Hall Orchestra; Alan Tongue.
