Description: Don't confuse this release with its later, "Volume Two", sister item (07O012) which also contains works by the same three composers. All are Silesian, Szabelski studied with Szymanowski and taught Górecki who taught Knapik, allowing one to see in the 1973 La flûte de jade a line of influence going all the way back to Szymanowski. In fact, this four-movement piece, setting French translations of old Chinese poetry, a Lied von der Erde as Szymanowski and Messiaen might have collaborated on. The bold, bracing neo-classicism of Szabelski remains utterly enjoyable, the Toccata (1936) high-speed yet delicate and intricate, the three movements of the 1954 Concerto grosso - really more of a Concerto for Orchestra - sandwiching a still, nocturnal Lento between two high-momentum, barrelling fast movements. Górecki does much the same with his Dances (1973), a hammering presto marcatissimo and presto wrapped around a gentle Andante cantabile - Tranquillo. French-Polish texts. Bozena Harasimowicz (soprano), Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra; Miroslaw Jacek Blaszczyk.  2009 release.
