Description: The big, 36-minute sonata from 1881, welds influences from Schumann, Brahms and Liszt into a strong personal voice; the German songs of 1880 are still anchored to Schumann but the Hugo settings of 1893 and the unpublished mélodies, probably equally late, show astonishingly free approach to tonality and word-setting which prefigures Debussy's Pelleas.
